Guest Post | DIY Vegan Hair Mask


As well choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair, it’s important to give it the right sort of nutrients so it can stay strong, healthy and shiny. You can do this by including plenty of dark green leafy vegetables and protein in your diet, but you can also give your hair some extra TLC by applying a nourishing hair mask.

I love experimenting with natural ingredients, and my vegan recipe delivers a host of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that help restore weak, brittle hair and moisturizes from root to tip. DIY Hair Mask Recipe


Ingredients needed:

- 1/2 Avocado
- 1/2 Banana
- 50 ml Coconut Milk
- 2 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil


Avocado Using avocado in a hair mask is a great way to nourish your hair cells and strengthen your roots. It contains vitamins, minerals, protein and amino acids, which all help revive your strands and repair damage from styling and environmental factors. Applying avocado on your scalp means it can easily absorb Vitamins B6 and E, which are known to heal skin and promote new hair growth. It’s also effective in penetrating hair cuticles to lock in natural moisture.

Banana
Massaging banana into your scalp works as a natural exfoliator to gently remove excess skin cells, whilst at the same time delivering a healthy dose of Vitamins A, B, C and E, minerals and natural oils. Banana can also repair and condition your hair, protecting its natural elasticity so it can withstand stress from brushing and styling. It’s the perfect way to rejuvenate dry, dull hair, adding moisture and shine.

Coconut Milk
You might be more familiar with using coconut oil on your strands, but coconut milk also has a huge range of benefits which can enhance your hair’s natural beauty. It contains Vitamins B1, B3, B5, B6, C and E, iron, calcium, magnesium and lauric acid. This helps nourish hair that feels dry, damaged or brittle, and also works as a natural detangler to make your hair more manageable. Need I say more?

Coconut Oil
Many people use coconut oil on their hair, as it helps keep it healthy and manageable. It is rich in vitamins, minerals and medium chain fatty acids, and can help reduce breakages and thicken hair so you can enjoy long, shiny locks. It contains antioxidants and has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it ideal for combating dandruff and other scalp infections. Coconut oil can also stimulate new hair growth and nourish your roots by improving the overall health your scalp.

Olive Oil
Don’t be afraid of using a little olive in a hair mask. It has rich moisturizing properties, and smooths the outer cuticles of hair strands to reduce frizz and make styling easier. It delivers Vitamins A and E, and also protects the keratin in your hair so its moisture doesn’t seep out. Olive oil also infuses hair with oleic and palmitic acid, which helps make it soft and shiny.


Method
If you’re thinking this hair mask sounds good enough to eat, it is! It’s also very simple to make. Place all the ingredients in a blender, and mix until you have a smooth paste. It’s better to use a blender than a fork, as a smooth paste is easier to wash out.

Apply the mixture all over your hair and scalp, making sure your skin is saturated and that you work all the way down to the ends where your hair is driest. Massage your scalp for a few minutes using the tips of your fingers and applying medium pressure.

Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. You can put a shower cap on to avoid drips, or relax in the tub whilst reading a book (I would definitely go for the latter).

When you’re ready, wash your hair with a gentle shampoo, and then condition as usual. Make sure you thoroughly rinse your hair to avoid smelling like bananas. Once your hair is dry, it should feel healthy, smooth and shiny.
